Henry Richard Thurtell was born April 30, 1905, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He and his wife, Isabel Van Niekerk, were married in South Africa on September 5, 1939. They lived in South Africa and Zimbabwe and had six children. Henry Richard Thurtell died in Tzaneen, South Africa, on June 1, 1998.

The above photographs are from the collection of Errol Thurtell. The one on the left was taken at Butterfly Falls, Northern Rhodesia, in the early 1920's. The photo on the right shows was taken by Bergs in Camps Bay, Cape Province, South Africa, in 1928.
