Notes for John T. WITHROW
Records of Mt. Zion Cemetery, Cornelia, Grant County, Wisconsin show that
John T. Withrow was born June 6, 1841, and died January 6, 1890, and had
a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) flag. His wife, Margaret J. Withrow,
is also buried there, along with their son, Bertie Withrow.
The Wisconsin marriage index shows John Y. Withrow and Margaret J. Wilson
were married February 22, 1871, in Grant County, Wisconsin, and the
record is in Volume 5, Page 134, Sequence 23012 - 23013.
He and his family are listed in the 1880 U.S. Census for Paris, Grant
County, Wisconsin (Volume 10, ED 120, Sheet 6, Line 31), which was
enumerated June 9, 1880. This shows him as John T. Witherow, age 42 born
in Wisconsin and a farmer, whose mother was born in Illinois. He is
living with his wife, Margaret J. Witherow, age 30, born in Illinois.
Her occupation is shown as keeping house, and the census shows her father
was born in Wisconsin and her mother in Illinois Their five children
listed were all born in Wisconsin. Julia Ann is 6; Frank E. is 5, Minnie
J. is 3; Hattie May is 2; and John A. Witherow is age 9/12 and was born
in September. Julia and Frank attended school during the census year.
The 1901 Biographical Sketch Book of Grant County, Wisconsin, in the
listing for Daniel Stanton, shows that John Withrow, the son of William
and Martha Withrow, was born in Potosi, Wisconsin, in 1841. "He was a
soldier in the Union army, enlisting in Company H, 25th Wis. V. I., and
served throughout the Civil war. He married Miss Margaret Wilson, and
settled on the old homestead in the town of Paris, where he died Jan. 6,
1890, leaving a wife and seven children."
He is possibly the "Jno Withrow" listed in the January 1, 1883, list of
Pensioners on the Roll, shown as living in Dickeysville, Grant County,
Wisconsin, receiving a pension of $12.00 per month due to "dis. left
lung."
