Notes for Maria P. MORRISON

The family Bible given to Maria P. Snow from B. W. & M. A. Morrison on
December 25, 1864, is still (as of 1997) in the possession of her great
granddaughter, Susan Persia Thurtell Miller. This Bible lists the dates
and places of birth of her children and her grandchildren, and the dates
and places of death of her sons, father, and husband. She lists her
name in this Bible as Maria P. Morrison and shows she was born April 24,
1842, in Groton, Vermont, and married Charles B. Snow on January 2, 1861,
in Dallas County, Iowa.

Maria Morrison Snow lived with her son-in-law and daughter, Henry and
Julia Mary (Mate) Snow Thurtell, for years, both in Nevada and in
Washington, DC. The grandchildren always called her Nanny Snow. Old
pictures in the possession of Susan Miller and RobRoy (Sandy) McGregor
also refer to her as "Nanny Snow."

Also in the possession of Susan Miller is a listing of births and deaths
of the Morrison family in the handwriting of Mate Snow Thurtell written
in the early 1930's with the annotation "The old family Bible was gone -
no one knew anything about it. These names and dates were copied in the
one Bible they have now." This shows her name as Elizabeth Maria
Morrison, born April 24, 1842. A family record completed by Susan Miller
on January 24, 1977, used this sheet to show her name as Elizabeth Maria
Morrison.

The records of the Groton Town Clerk, Caledonia County, Vermont,
researched in 1997 for Susan Miller by Jim Dresser (Jim@@Dresser.net)
confirm that the Town Clerk records show her as Maria P. Morrison, while
the name of her sister, Betsey, is shown as Elizabeth M. Morrison.

She is shown as Maria Snow, age 66 and a widow, white, born in Vermont
with both parents born in Vermont, living with her daughter, Mary
Thurtell, son-in-law, Henry Thurtell, and their children in the U.S.
Census for Reno City, Washoe County, Nevada, for 1910 (Supervisor's
District 171, Enumeration District 71, Sheet 7A). This shows they were
living at 761 North Centre Street, Reno, Nevada. The census was
enumerated on April 10, 1910.

She is shown as Marie Snow, age 77, born in Vermont, living with her
son-in-law and daughter, Henry and Mate Snow Thurtell, at 1217 Delafield,
Washington, DC, in the 1920 U.S. Census soundex for Washington, DC (Vol.
18, E.D. 329, Sheet 7, Line 32).

Timothy Morrison and his family are listed in the 1850 U.S. Census for
Groton, Caledonia County, Vermont (Cale 137, lines 154-158). This shows
Timothy Morrison, age 45, a farmer, owning real estate valued at $2800,
living with his wife, Olive, age 42, and his children Harriet age 19,
Christine age 16, Braley (should be Bradley) age 13, George age 11,
Mariah age 8, and Betsey age 5. All of them were born in Vermont. The
census was ennumerated on September 13, 1850, with the information as of
June 1, 1850.

Timothy Morrison is also listed in the Vermont 1840 U.S. Census index
(Cale 360, Groton). He is not listed in the Vermont 1820 or 1830 U.S.
Census indexes.
