Notes for Edward F HIGGINSON

Clay County, Illinois, has no record of the death of Edward Higginson,
although he is buried at Rusk Cemetery, Clay County, Illinois. The
burial record shows his name as Edward F. Higginson, born February 17,
1821, and died December 30, 1897. The census records for Clay County
show he was born in North Carolina, and was in Clay County in 1860, 1870,
and 1880. A letter from their brother, Samuel Higginson, who was living
in Amador County, California, to Amelia Higginson states that their
brother Edward was living in Flora, Clay County, Illinois.

The U.S. Census for 1860 for Clay County, Township 3N R7E, Flora Post
Office, on page 146, numbers 1025-1005, lists Edward Higginson and his
family. He is shown as a farmer, age 39, born in North Carolina, whose
personal property is valued at $200. The value of real estate is blank.
His wife Evaline is shown as 26 and born in Kentucky. Their sons,
Ephrim, age 7, Thomas, age 5, and Francis age 3, were all born in
Illinois, and the two older children attended school in the prior year.
Just prior to this family in the same census is the family of Alexander
Higginson, age 46, born in Indiana, a farmer whose personal property is
valued at $600 and whose real estate is valued at $600. Alexander's
wife, Jane, age 55, and children Francis A. (female, age 21), Edward, age
19, and Jane Jr., age 17, were all born in Indiana. The occupation of
Alexander's daughter Francis is school something (a word I cannot read
that looks like Nup).

Just after the family of Edward Higginson in the 1860 census is the
family of Andrew Powers or Powere. Andrew is a farmer age 35 born in
Virginia, whose real estate is worth $1800 and personal property is worth
$300. His wife, Sarah A., is 22 and born in Ohio. Their children Laura
A., 3, and Mary, 1, were born in Illinois. Also living with this family
is Charles Higginson, age 20, born in Ohio, whose real estate is worth
$100 and personal property is worth $100. No relationships are shown on
the 1860 census - I have made assumptions regarding the relationships of
wives and children.

The Edward F. Higginson who is Amelia's brother is not the person who
served in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. The Muster and
Descriptive Rolls of Illinois Civil War Units on file at the Illinois
State Archives, Springfield, Illinois 62756, for Company A 98th Infantry
show that Edward Higgison, Private, age 21, height five feet nine inches,
with auburn hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, single, a farmer born in
Indiana residing in Flora, Clay County, Illinois (undoubtedly the son of
Alexander and Jane Higginson listed in the 1860 Illinois census) joined
the Union Army for three years in Clay County, Illinois, on August 5,
1862. He was mustered into service on September 3, 1862, at Camp
Centralia, Illinois, by Captain Washington. He was mustered out May 27,
1865, in Louisville by Captain Smith under G. O. 27 1865 Dept. Ky. He is
not included in the Report of the Adjutant General of the State of
Illinois published in 1901 for the 98th Illinois Infantry, so he may have
transferred to another unit.

Also entering Company A of the Illinois 98th Infantry was Charles
Higgison, age 22, born in Miami County, Ohio, a farmer residing in
Louisville, Fayette County, Illinois. He was five feet, six inches tall,
with light hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion and joined for service
in Clay County, Illinois, on July 25, 1862, for three years. He was
mustered into Camp Centralia, Illinois, by Captain Washington on
September 3, 1862. The Muster and Descriptive Rolls of Illinois Civil
War Units on file at the Illinois State Archives, Springfield, Illinois
62756, for Company A 98th Infantry show Charles Higgison died November 9,
1862, at Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Report of the Adjutant General of
the State of Illinois published in 1901 for the 98th Illinois Infantry,
which is available at the Wheaton, Illinois, library, shows that Charles
Higgison, a private, whose residence was Louisville, enlisted July 25,
1862, and died at Bowling Green, Kentucky, November 9, 1862. Charles
Higgison is shown as buried in the National Cemetery at Nashville,
Tennessee, in the Roll of Honor of Soldiers Who Died in Defense of the
American Union. This record, in Volume XXII, Number 1009, shows Charles
Higgison, a private in Company A of the 98th Infantry, died November 14,
1862, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and is buried in Section N, Grave
Number 265.
