Thurtell and Related Families
Notes for John Brookes THURTELL
The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900, the 1963 Thurtell
family history, and the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan
Persia Thurtell about 1968, all in possession of Susan Persia Thurtell
Miller, show John Thurtell married Ellen and that he died February 15,
1879, at 67.
According to information from the Norwich Public Libraries a John Brooks
Thurtell was living at South Quay, Yarmouth, in 1852. This is probably
the same person.
Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that John Brooks
Thurtell was a Navy Captain and that a photo of him exists. It shows
that Captain John Brooks Thurtell, born1812, died February 15,1879, aged
67, is buried in Thirkley (?Kirkley) churchyard in Lowestoft. He married
Ellen Aldred (N.B. there was a prominent Lowestoft family of that name,
including Obed Aldred, a founding partner of the Lowestoft China Works in
1758). They must have been living in Yarmouth in 1845 since a son was
born there.
