Notes for Charles THURTELL
According to information in the History of the Thurtell Family done by
Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968 and information from the Norwich Public
Library about the Thurtell family, Charles Thurtell was a lieutenant in
the Royal Navy. He married Mrs. Susannah Dundas of Chapel Field at St.
Giles Church, Norwich, on April 24, 1825. He died at Calais in October
1856 at the age of 60.
Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that Charles
Thurtell, the third son (born perhaps in the 1790's), was lieutenant on
HMS Rochford in 1821. He would be the same Charles Thurtell who was a
midshipman on H.M.S. Aboukir in 1811 and a lieutenant on the sloop
"Chanteleer" in 1824 (ff p.2 in book about John Thurtell the murderer).
He was married for the first time at St. Giles, Norwich, England, on
April 21, 1825, to Miss Susan Dunham of Chapel Field, Norwich. He
married secondly at Stoke Damerel, Devon (this is near Plymouth where
presumably his ship was stationed), to Ann Augusta Morgan, youngest
daughter of John Morgan, Royal Navy surgeon.
The 1851 British Census lists Charles Thurtell, age 54, born in Bradwell,
Suffolk, whose occupation is Commander R.N. as living at Prospect
Cottage, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, along with his wife Ann
Augusta Thurtell, who is age 43 and born in Hackney, Middlesex, England.
