Notes for William THURTELL
According to the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia
Thurtell about 1968 and information received about the Thurtell family
from the Norwich Public Library, William Thurtell was born about 1795 and
died in 1877. He was a Yarmouth Tory politician and Yarmouth borough
magistrate in 1846. He lived for many years at 3 Camperdown, Yarmouth;
before that he lived on the South Quay. About 1850 he and his sister
Susannah were the target of a series of broadsides issued by their
brother Charles. Charles accused William and Susannah of having plotted
to deprive him of his marriage settlement and of putting his father
against them. These broadsides contain references to other family
members.
Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that William
Thurtell, of Great Yarmouth, a strong conservative, debated with William
Cobbett at St. Andrews Hall there in January 1823. However, he was
defeated in the election that year. He is probably the William Thurtell
(born in Suffolk County) living at Thoubland Place, Gorleston Parish
Suffolk, in the 1841 census, at which time he was of independent means
and aged 45 (rounded to nearest 5 years). Living with him at that time
were Caroline Thurtell aged 23 and Henriette Thurtell aged 19, neither of
whom were born in Suffolk, but whether these were daughters (as is
likely) was not stated. William Thurtell, then described as gentleman of
Lakenham, Norfolk, was married there on March 7, 1817, to Caroline
Alexander, singlewoman of Gunton Suffolk, the bondsman being his father
Thomas Thurtell esq. of Lakenham.
The 1998 British Vital Records Index CD shows that William Thurtell and
Caroline Alexander were married March 8, 1817, as recorded in Lakenham,
Norfolk, England (source: FHL number 1526494).
The 1851 British Census lists William Thurtell as a widower, whose
occupation is a Fund holder, age 56, born in Bradwell, Suffolk, living at
South Quay, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England (PRO Reference HO/107/1806,
Folio 273, Page 7, FHL Film 0207457). He is living with his daughter,
Caroline A. Thurtell, unmarried, age 32, who was born in Yarmouth,
Norfolk; his daughter, Henrietta A. Thurtell, unmarried, age 29, who was
also born in Yarmouth, Norfolk; a servant named Mary Burling, a widow age
50, who was the cook and born in Woolwich, Kent; and a servant named Emma
Hammond, unmarried, age 22, who was the house servant and born in
Gisleham, Suffolk.
