Notes for Roger Hi-Regan Everitt MURRAY
According to information received from Peter Murray in 1997, Lt. Colonel
Roger Hi-Regan Everitt Murray, "Rory," was born December 29, 1895, and
died April 21, 1968. He was a career soldier and an officer (South
African Artillery) in both World Wars. Known as "Colonel Snakebite" to
his men, who despite the nickname were devoted to him, he retired as Lt.
Colonel D.S.O. (for gallantry in action). He married, in
Laurenco-Marques Mozambique, Unita Murray, "Nita," nee Thorburne, the
divorced wife of his younger brother Lal Murray. This marriage caused a
deep split in the family and Rory never again visited Graaff Reinet. It
proved to be a long and happy marriage. They settled on the farm "Godwan
River," originally obtained by his father and raised two children.
John Brian Thurtell Murray, legally adopted by Rory, was actually the son
of Nita by her former marriage with Lal Murray.Roger George Thurtell
Murray was the natural son of Rory and Nita.
