Notes for Everitt George Dunne MURRAY
Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that Professor
Everitt George Dunne Murray, O.B.E., M.A., L.M.S.S.A., M.D., D.Sc., was
known as "Opa" to his grandchildren, "Biff" to his relatives, "Ever" to
his wife, and "Joburg" to friends and colleagues. He studied medicine in
England and became a researcher in bacteriology first with the Medical
Research Council in England and then in Canada beginning in 1930. He
brought the Murray family to Canada in 1930. For 25 years Dr. Everitt
Murray was Professor and Chairman of Microbiology and Immunology at
McGill University in Montreal, and after retiring in 1955 continued his
research as Visiting Professor of Medical Research at University of
Western Ontario in London. He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa,
July 21, 1890, eldest child of Dr. George A. E. and Kathleen (Dunne)
Murray, and died July 6, 1964, in London, Ontario. He was educated at
Cambridge University and St. Bartholomew's Hospital in England. He was
married in London, England, on December 17, 1917, to Harriet Winifred
Hardwick Woods. He received many honours for his scientific
achievements. He was a Captain RAMC in Mesopotamia and India during the
first war, and Joint Chairman of the top secret Canadian-U.S.-British
Committee on Biological, Chemical and Smoke Warfare during the second
war, for which he afterwards received the Medal of Freedom from the U.S.
government. He also served for many years as a City Councillor in
Montreal. Everitt and Winifred Murray had two children.
