Notes for Kathleen Elizabeth Mary DUNNE

Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that Kathleen
Elizabeth Mary Dunne, "Kit," born April 25, 1862, in Melbourne,
Australia, died April 27, 1936, in Johannesburg. She was a daughter of
Captain John Joseph Dunne (see DUNNE family) and was a sister of nursing
at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London before her marriage. During the
Boer War both she and her husband were invested by Queen Victoria with
the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in recognition of their medical
services during the conflict. A symbolic British flag made in secret by
Kathleen prior to the British entry to Johannesburg was hung above the
throne on the coronation of King Edward in 1901. She was a nurse before
and after her marriage and was a daughter of Captain John Joseph Dunne,
an Irishman who had been a close collaborator and supporter of Isaac Butt
in the "Home Rule" Movement.
