Notes for George Everitt MURRAY

The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900 and the History of
the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968 show him as
George Thurtell but list his wife, daughter, and granddaughter.

Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that George, the
eldest son of Alfred and Mary (Everitt) Murray, was born in London on
November 29, 1830, and christened December 25, 1830, at the Scotch
Church, Saint Pancres, Regent Square, London. He became a farmer in the
Graaff Reinet district in the Karoo, and was an authority on, and breeder
of, Angora Goats. A later newspaper clipping described him as "a mighty
big game hunter." He moved about a lot, farming in various districts,
and was appointed Field Cornet, Rheunosterberg, Hopetown in 1869. The
last farm he and his wife Jenny occupied was at Perrieshoogte, from which
they moved to Graaff Reinet in 1898. He died August 5, 1901; and both he
and his wife are buried at Graaff Reinet.
