Thurtell and Related Families
Notes for Harriet TRAVIS
She is listed as Hattie Thurtell, age 26, born in Michigan, wife of
Howard Thurtell, in the 1920 U.S. Census Soundex for Michigan (Vol. 53,
E.D. 73 or 93, Sheet 3, Line 3). She is shown living with her husband
and their baby, Jane Thurtell, age 5/12, on Paris Road, East Grand
Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. Her name is shown as Harriett Thurtell,
born February 21, 1893, who died May 10, 1985, in Honor, Kent County,
Michigan with a residence in the same city in the Michigan death index
for death certificate 28723.
The article about the wedding of Eva Thurtell and Dr. Edward A. Miller
that appeared in the "Traverse City Record Eagle" on August 24, 1911,
showed that "Miss Hattie Travis of Grand Rapids presided at the piano
both druing and after the ceremony," which was held at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Walter Thurtell, 630 West Ninth Street, Traverse City, Michigan,
on August 24, 1911. An e-mail from Harriet Travis Thurtell's grandson,
Joel Thurtell, on July 17, 1998, confirmed that this must have been
referring to his grandmother. He stated that she "was an accomplished
musician, spent some time at Oberlin College studying music and was
director of various church choirs." He added that he thought she was
director of the First Congregational Church (now First United Church of
Christ) choir in Lowell, Michigan, for a while. He recalled that she
also directed a choir in a church in Ionia, Michigan, where she and her
husband lived, and ran a dress shop for a number of years. Later she ran
a dress shop in Lowell, Michigan.
