Thurtell and Related Families
Notes for Alfred Ernst MICKLE
The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900, the Thurtell Family
History done by Irene Peters about 1963, and the History of the Thurtell
Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, all in the possession of
Susan Persia Thurtell Miller, show no other information shown about
Alfred Ernst Mickle.
Information received from Charlotte Mackie in 1997 that had been provided
by Grace Mickle Harper at the Wellington County Archives, Fergus, shows:
"Alfred Ernest Mickle, elected to A.R.C.A. 1918, youngest son of Charles
Mickle and Ellen Thurtell of "Langholme" on the Elora Road, he was the
youngest of 13 children, born, Feb. 26, 1869 died Sept. 6th, 1966 lived
for many years in St. Catherines, & was buried next to his wife Jean
Reid, niece of George Reid his first teacher at the first Art school in
Toronto. He painted in Quebec, Nova Scotia, Grand ?Manan?, Bermuda, & in
England & Scotland. In 1954 he had a one man show at St. Catherines Art
Gallery exhibiting 33 pictures & at that time he was believed to be the
oldest living academy associate member. The showing was arranged by Art
Department of Ridley College. He was a friend and fellow artist of Homer
Watson, Archibald Brown, Horatio Walker. They painted sometimes together
& each one was helped by the others in assessing the paintings. He
enjoyed painting land & sea, clouds flying, wind in the trees. He
studied in Toronto, Scotland & Brussels School of Art."
