It is very possible that this Charles Mickle is the one listed in the
1871 Ontario Census Index - File //Wellington/Wellington 59, Line 44. It
shows Charles Mickle, age 58, born in England, religion: Canadian
Presbyterian, paternal ethnic origin: English, Lumber Merchant, District
033, Subdistrict B, Division 2, page 3900.
Information received from Charlotte Mackie in 1997 includes the following
information about Charles and Ellen Mickle, which had been provided by
Grace Mickle Harper at the Wellington County Archives, Fergus: "They
were married in Guelph in 1844, lived for a few years at Puslinch where
he lumbered, they then moved to Elora Road 3 miles from Guelph. They had
13 children - one girl died in infancy, 6 girls & 6 boys grew up at
"Langholme" the family residence. Their children attended school &
Grammar school in Guelph, later the University of Toronto & Art school.
Many of the children married & settled in Toronto where their families
grew up. Two girls & two boys were unmarried. After the father's death
the family had moved & lived at 10 Queens Park Toronto near the
University. Mrs. Mickle died in October 1882 at her home 18 Grenville
St. One grandson a doctor lived in England & was medical advisor to the
Queen. Sir Arthur Ellis. Many of grandfather Mickle's brothers and
sisters married & lived in the Guelph area. The Dr. Howitt families &
the Passmore families."
Charles Mickle is listed in the 1857 Canada Directory by John Lovell as a
lumberer in Puslinch, Wellington. This listing is shown in "Directory of
the Province of Ontario 1857" by Thomas B. Wilson and Emily S. Wilson,
Hunterdon House, Lambertville, NJ, 1987 (R929.3713 WIL at the Wheaton,
Illinois, library).
