Notes for Walter THURTELL
The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900 and the History of
the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, both in the
possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller, show Walter Thurtell married
(1) Ellen, (2) Matilda, and (3) Emma Harden and had no issue.
The IGI file of the LDS Family History Center (Batch C075291) shows
Walter Thurtell, son of Walter Thurtell and Honor, was christened
December 19, 1821, at Wells Next the Sea, Independent, Norfolk, England.
The 1998 LDS British Isles Vital Record Index CD shows Walter Thurtell,
the son of Walter Thurtell and Honor, was born November 6, 1821, at
Wighton, Norfolk, England, and his birth was recorded in Dr. Williams
Library for England and Wales. This record shows his mother's father was
John Clark. The source is FHL Number 816012, note: 2917.
Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that Walter Thurtell
lived in Ormsby House, Grange Road, Sutton, Surrey. He married first
Ellen, married second Matilda, and married third Emma Harden, but had no
issue from any marriage. Emma was living in 1899 at Ormsby House and was
known to the Roodebloem Murrays as "Grannie Thurtell."
He is almost certainly the Walter (Jun) Thurtell listed in the 1851
British Census as age 29, married, a merchant and farmer with 124 acres
and 4 labourers, born in Wighton, Norfolk, and living at Wighton
Walsingham, Norfolk. Living with him is his wife, Matilda Thurtell, age
33, born in Haddiscoe, Norfolk. Also living with them are Ann Jackson,
unmarried, age 18, born in Warham, Norfolk, and Reba Claxton, age 25,
unmarried, born in Wighton, Norfolk, their house servants. (PRO
Reference HO/107/1826, Folio 373, Page 7, FHL Film 0207480).
