Persia Bell Bishop Thurtell Burns was born July 27, 1894, in Reno, Nevada, the only daughter of Henry Thurtell and Persia Bishop. Her mother died when Persia was one day old and had been the daughter of Dr. Simeon Bishop, one of the Nevada pioneers and very well known in the Washoe - Carson - Virginia City - Reno area of Nevada.
Persia's father remarried Julia Mary (Mate) Snow on August 5, 1896, in Pacific Grove, California, and Persia often recalled how she was the only one of the children to attend the wedding of her mother and father. Persia married Dr. William Patrick Burns in 1916, and they had one child, a son named Byrne Thurtell Burns. Byrne was born June 10, 1918 in the Phillippines, where his father was practicing medicine in a lepers' colony. Byrne died April 11, 1937, in Washington, DC.
