Notes for Thomas F. HANNIGAN
George Miller recalled that Thomas Hannigan lived in New York City, New York, and was a fireman. In a 1997 telephone conversation, Madeline Brett recalled that the brother of Thomas Hannigan was named Roger Hannigan, who had a son named George Hannigan, who was a little younger than she was. Both Roger and George Hannigan lived in New York and worked for the telephone company.
The New York City Directory for 1890 on the internet in 1999 from http://www.ancestry.com shows a Thomas Hannigan, a fireman, living at 928 Second Av, New York City. This is very possibly the correct person.
The U.S. Census for 1900 for New York County, New York, for New York City, Borough of Bronx, Supervisor's District 1, Enumeration District 1041, sheet 14, line 81, enumerated June 8, 1900, shows Thomas Hannigan was born in New York in June 1857 and was age 42, white, and living with his family at 2400 Webster Avenue, New York City, Bronx Borough, New York County, New York. It shows he was a New York City Fireman and that he owned his home with no mortgage. It shows both his parents were born in Ireland. This census shows his wife Emma, was born in May 1864 in Ireland and was white and age 36. It shows that Thomas and Emma Hannigan had been married 18 years and that she was the mother of eight children, six of whom were living. It shows Emma had lived in the United States for 32 years, since 1868, but the section for whether or not she was a citizen is blank. It shows both her parents were born in Ireland. The name of the oldest daughter is blank on the census record, although she is shown as born in New York in December 1883, age 16. The next oldest child is shown as May, age 14, born in New York in May 1886. Next is Lillian, age 9, born in September 1890 in New York. Next is Grace, age 6, born in New York in August 1883 (which probably should be 1893). The next child is Florence, age 4, born in New York in May 1896; and the youngest child is James, age 1, born in New York in November 1898.
Thomas Hannigan and his family are listed in the 1920 U.S. Census for Bronx County, New York, in Volume 120, Enumeration district 388, Sheet 11A, Lines 31-38. They are shown as living at 2423 Southern Boulevard, New York City, Bronx County, New York. Thomas Hannigan is shown as age 60, born in New York with both parents born in New York. It lists his occupation as none. His wife Emma, is shown as 59, born in Ireland, with her father born in Ireland and her mother born in New York. English is shown as her the mother tongue. It shows she immigrated to the United States in 1884 and became a naturalized citizen in 1889. The children living at home are all shown as born in New York. They are Lily C., age 27, single, working as a clerk in the insurance business; Grace C., age 25, single, working as a clerk for a druggist; Irene, age 16, single, working as a clerk for Edison Company; Madeline R., age 13, single, occupation none; and James, age 21, single, working as a clerk for Edison Company.
