Bertha M. McClain is shown as age 7, born in South Dakota in December 1892, and attending school in the 1900 U.S. Census for Meade County, South Dakota (Volume 11, SD 1, ED 34, Sheet 7, Line 29). She is living with her parents, John and Grace McClain, and four siblings in the second ward of the City of Sturgis, Sturgis Township, Meade County, South Dakota.

An online birth certificate was found for Bertha May McClain in January 2000 on the internet at http://www.state.sd.us/doh/vitalrec. It shows that a delayed birth certificate was filed for her on August 19, 1960, under South Dakota State File Number 783113 showing that Bertha May McClain was born October 12, 1893, in Meade County, South Dakota, the daughter of Grace Thurtell and John McClain.

An e-mail from Lynn McElroy in January 2000 advised that the delayed birth certificate was filed for Bertha McClain to prove documentation for her collection of Old Age Pension. Prior to this date, her only proof of birth was her baptism certificate. She advised that as far as her mother, Cleo Palmer Bresnick, could recall, Bertha and William Melville Palmer, whose nickname was Nig, were married in 1914 in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
