The 1851 British Census lists Charles Thurtell, age 54, born in Bradwell, Suffolk, whose occupation is Commander R.N. as living at Prospect Cottage, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, along with his wife Ann Augusta Thurtell, who is age 43 and born in Hackney, Middlesex, England. (PRO Reference HO/107/1806, Folio 717, Page 8, FHL Film 0207458).

The Naval Biographical Dictionary of 1849 on page 29 which was found on the internet in December 1999 at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plaines/5399/obyrne5.txt shops Charles Thurtell was born February 29, 1796. He entered the Navy March 26, 1807, became a Commander in 1843, and married Ann Augusta Morgan on May 2, 1837.
