Notes for Mary BROOKES

The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900, the 1963 Thurtell Family History, and the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, all in the possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller, show Mary Brooks Thurtell died July 20, 1854, at 67.

Information received in 1997 from Peter Murray shows that Mary Brooks (or Brookes), born 1787, died July 20, 1854, aged 67 was the sister of Sarah Brooks, who married John's first cousin Thomas Thurtell, son of Thomas Thurtell mayor of Norwich. Mary Brooks Thurtell's burial is recorded in Hopton parish September 25, 1854, aged 66 as "Mary Thurkle, Yarmouth".

John and Mary Thurtell lived at Pakefield (not Parkfield) Farm House, and had four children.

She is possibly the Mary Thurtell in the 1851 British Census (PRO Reference HO/107/1806, Folio 419, Page 21, FHL Film 0207458) shown as head of the household, a widow, age 63, with an occupation of annuitant, born in Holborn, Middlesex, and living on North Road, Great Yarmouth, with a census place of Great Yarmouth, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Enumerated with her is Charlotte Dove, age 20, a house servant born in Martham, Norfolk, and a visitor, Isobella Sherrington, age 12, born in Yarmouth, Norfolk, whose occupation is shown as solicitors daughter.

Information received in August 1999 from James Thurtell (jim.thurtell@@bt.com) showed there was a record of the marriage of Mary Brookes Thurtell between January and March 1838. This could either be a second marriage for this Mary Brookes, the widow of John Thurtell, or another child of John and Mary Brookes Thurtell.
