Notes for Charlotte Thurtell (MURRAY)

The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900 and the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, both in the possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller, show that Charlotte Thurtell died unmarried.

Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that, although the 'Thurtell Pedigree' showed that Charlotte Thurtell died young, this was obviously incorrect. Charlotte Thurtell (Murray) was born August 15, 1801, and was baptised September 6, 1801, at Hopton, Suffolk, England. A photograph in the possession of Professor George Thurtell of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, a descendant of her brother, Benjamin Thurtell, shows her as Charlotte Murray, who was born August 15, 1801, and died in Liverpool June 13, 1861. It therefore appears that she was yet another member of the family to change her name to Murray (unless she married after all and it was a married name). She is stated to have died unmarried and been quite a noted woman who held finishing classes for girls.

Her brothers, Alfred and Walter, also changed their last name to Murray following the scandal relating to their cousin, John Thurtell.
