Notes for Frank THURTELL

Frank Thurtell and his family are listed in the U.S. Census soundex for 1880 for Iowa (Vol. 32, E.D. 220, Sheet 23, Line 25) as living in Webster County, Elkhorn Township. This index shows Frank Thurtell as a white male, age 28, born in Wisconsin. It shows his wife, Eva Thurtell, as age 25, born in Wisconsin. His daughter, Mary, is 4 and born in Wisconsin. His daughter, Olive, is 2 and born in Wisconsin. His son, Frank, is 1 and born in Wisconsin. The census record itself shows that Frank Thurtell is a farmer, with his father born in England and his mother in Canada. Eva's occupation in the census is shown as keeping house, and her father is shown as born in Pennsylvania and her mother in England. Mary, Olive, and Frank are not yet in school in the census record.

Frank Thurtell and his family are listed in the U.S. Census for 1900 for Iowa (Volume 60, ED 102, SD 11, Sheet 5, Line 69) as living in Elkhorn Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. It shows Frank Thurtell as age 48, born in Wisconsin in December 1852, with his father born in England and his mother in Indiana. He owns his farm but has a mortgage. His wife, Eva S. Thurtell, age 44, was born in Wisconsin in November 1855, and the census shows her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in England. The census shows they have been married 25 years and that she is the mother of 12 children, of whom 10 are living. His daughter, Olive E. Thurtell, age 22, was born in Wisconsin in October 1877, and her occupation is shown as at home. Their seven younger children were all born in Iowa. Edward B. Thurtell, age 19, was born in March 1889 according to the census soundex, but the last digit of the year is hard to read in the census itself and probably should be 1881. He is shown as a farm laborer. Anthony, age 16, was born in March 1884. Robert L., age 14, was born in January 1886. Carson, age 10, was born in July 1889. Blanche L., age 8, was born in February 1892. Eva M., age 6, was born in January 1894. Grace L., age 3, was born in February 1897.

The entry about Ransom B. Folts in a 1901 Grant County, Wisconsin, biographical record shows his wife's brother, Frank Thurtell, was a farmer in Iowa.

The marriage certificate for Frank Thurtell and Mary Smith shows they were married in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, on June 4, 1920, and the record was filed July 12, 1920. The groom is shown as age 69 and born in Wisconsin, and the bride is shown as age 31 and born in Mapleton, Iowa.

During the 1999 Thurtell Family Reunion Frank Thurtell's daughters, Dorothy Thurtell Richardson, and May Thurtell Thomas, advised that Frank and his second wife, Mary May Thurtell, separated about 1927 or 1928 in Jefferson, South Dakota. She had told her daughters that they were divorced, but neither of them had ever seen divorce papers nor were they sure at all that there was any divorce. Dorothy Richardson recalled that Frank Thurtell was hospitalized for quite a while, probably about six months, at St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa, before his death, and that she had visited him there. Another family source had shown that he died in St. Vincent's Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa.

The death certificate for Frank Thurtell shows a state registration number of 097-6962. It confirms that he died at St. Vincent's Hospital, Sioux City, Sioux City Township, Woodbury County, Iowa, on March 22, 1929. His residence is shown as the Ego Hotel, and the death certificate shows he had resided in the city for 50 years. It shows he was a divorced white male with no spouse's name shown and that he was born December 16, 1852, in Wisconsin and was age 76 years, 3 months, 16 days. His occupation is shown as retired. His parents are listed as Edward Thurtell, born in England, and Amy Burns, born in Indiana. The informant was Mrs. Eva Faul (although her signed surname looks more like Fall) of Des Moines. The doctor, Ja. Thomson, M. D., of Sioux City, Iowa, showed he attended the deceased from April 10, 1928, to March 22, 1929, and that the cause of death was Cerebral Hemmorhage with a secondary problem of Paresia. The date of burial is shown as March 25, 1929, in Kingsley, with the undertaker's signature looking like E. H. Derby of Kingsley.
