He was always called Dean according to his widow at the 1999 Thurtell family reunion. He was in the Navy in World War II. He worked as a federal civilian employee in the early days of the space program. They lived at 120 Huron Street, Syracuse, New York, for 17 years beginning in 1951. He later worked with General Electric for eight years as an Air Force employee, and they lived at 975 School Street, Collegeville, Pennsylvania. They moved there in about 1968, and came back to Camillus, New York, when her husband retired in 1976. They lived there for 17 years until Dean died.
