Notes for Bradbury MORRISON

Reverend Rufus Emery's 1890 book, "Genealogical Records of Descendants of John and Anthony Emery of Newbury, Mass." showed that person 440, Betsey Emery, the daughter of Charles Emery and Ann (Hodgdon) Emery, married Bradbury Morrison of Sanford, Maine, on January 25, 1790. It shows he was born in 1766 and died April 20, 1810. The family moved from Sanford, Maine, to Groton, Vermont, about 1796. Betsey and Bradbury Morrison and their children are listed on page 358 of this book, which was published in Salem, Massachusetts, by Emery Cleaves, printed by Salem Press Publishing and Printing Co. in 1891, and is available as of 1999 as a reprint from Higginson Book Company, 148 Washington Street, Post Office Box 778, Salem, Massachusetts 01970, phone 508-745-7171. A copy of this reprint is in the possession of Susan T. Miller.

Bradbury Morrison and his family are mentioned a number of times in the book, "Mister Glover's Groton, the Chronical of Groton, Vermont from 1789 to 1978," published in 1978 for the Groton Historical Society by Phoenix Publishing, Canaan, New Hampshire. On page 39 Bradbury Morrison and his father-in-law Charles Emery are included in the list of people attending the first town meeting for Groton, Vermont, on March 20, 1797, held at the home of John Darling. Page 70 of this book lists Bradbury Morrison among the twenty-seven pioneer families of Groton, Caledonia County, Vemont, and shows that as of 1803 he had nine sheep. Page 241 shows that in 1809 Bradbury Morrison was among the purchasers of a plot of the Darling farm for an addition to the north side of the Darling Cemetery. Bradbury Morrison was buried in this cemetery in 1810 and is commemorated on the Morrison monument in the Village Cemetery.

Information received from John Benzie shows that Bradbury Morrison moved to Groton, Caledonia County, Vermont, in 1796 and settled on the south half of Lot Number 12, First Division, which he purchased from his brother-in-law, John Emery.

His wife, Betsey Morrison, is listed as the head of the household in the 1820 U.S. Census for Groton, Caledonia County, Vermont, on page 361B, confirming that Bradbury Morrison died prior to 1820.
