Notes for Florence Sarah HAMMOND

The obituary for Florence Hammond Thurtell appeared in the "Newport Journal," Newport, Lincoln County, Oregon, on Wednesday, May 20, 1942, on page 1. It is on file at the University of Oregon Library, Eugene, Oregon. It shows, "Mrs. Thurtell Passes Away - Mrs. Florence Sarah Thurtell, the wife of Dr. W. S. Thurtell was found dead in her garage Saturday mornnig, [stet] a victim of carbon monoxide gas. She was born in New Windsor, Ill., on May 9th, 1891 and had made her home in this city for the past 18 years. She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Margaret Stenzel, of Agate Beach, her father, William Hammond of this city and a sister Mrs. Edna Powers of Alberta, Canada. Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church on Tuesday morning at 10:30 with Rev. R. M. Broadbooks officiating. Internment was in the Newport cemetery."

Her death certificate, recorded May 22, 1942, Oregon State File Number 51, Local Registrar's Number 16, shows her name as Florence Sarah Thurtell and confirms that she died May 16, 1942, in Newport, Lincoln County, Oregon. She is shown as a white female married to Wilfred S. Thurtell, who is shown as age 52. Her date of birth is shown as May 2, 1892, on the death certificate, which shows she was born in New Windsor, Illinois, and was 50 years, 14 days old at the time of death. Her occupation is shown as housewife with the industry or business shown as at home. The death certificate lists her father as William Thacius Hammond, born in Illinois, and her mother as Maude Blossom, born in Illinois. It was signed by the informant, her daughter Margaret Stenzel, of Newport, Oregon. It shows she was buried in Newport, Oregon, on May 19, 1942, and the funeral director was F. O. Parkes, Newport, Oregon. The death certificate shows her usual residence was 145 S. W. 7th, Newport, Lincoln County, Oregon, and that she had lived in the community and in in the state both for 18 years. The medical certification shows that the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning and that death occurred sometime between 10:30 p.m. on May 15, 1942, and 9 a.m. on May 16, 1942, in her garage and that she was dead on the arrival of the doctor. The death certificate confirms that the death was a suicide, and the death certificate is signed by the Coroner of Lincoln County, whose name looks like O. N. Callender, M.D. Most of the death certificate is typed except for the signatures and the medical certification.
