An article that appeared in the "Newport Journal," Newport, Oregon, on Wednesday, March 27, 1940, on page 1, found in microfilm at the University of Oregon Library, Eugene, Oregon, showed "Erecting New Business Building - Dr. W. S. Thurtell has purchased the lot on Hurbert street between the Skating Rink and the Bakery from Dick Wenner and has a crew at work on the excavation for the foundation of a new 30 by 40 foot office and store building. It will be a one story frame structure, divided to accomodate a store and an office. Construction work will start on the building as soon as possible."

Thurtell, was entitled to wife's benefits on his account effective May 1966, and was converted to widow's benefits effective January 1975, which she received until her death October 16, 1994. Her date of birth was established as May 8, 1904, and her own Social Security number is shown as 541-52-1680. Her mailing address was 740 West Hills Way North West, Salem, Oregon 97304-3652, at the time of her death.

World Family Tree Volume 13, Tree 1840, shows "Walter Laidlaw Thurtle, born February 12, 1888, to Margaret Laidlaw and Thurtle." That tree lists his children and grandchildren with the last name Thurtle and all details shown as "private." It also lists his brother as "Wilfred Stewart Thurtle, born October 15, 1890," and shows Wilfred's wife as Margaret with children as Janet? and Carol?

It shows, "Dr. Wilfred Stewart Thurtell, 85, Newport, died at a Salem nursing home on January 10. Funeral services were held Monday, January 13 at 3 p.m. at Bateman Funeral Chapel, Newport. Rev. Charles E. Poling of the First Presbyterian Church in Newport officiated. Officers of Newport Masonic Lodge No. 85 assisted. Dr. Thurtell was born in Teeswater, Ontario, Canada on Oct. 15, 1889. He graduated from Western Medical College in London, Ontario, Canada and practiced medicine in his native country until 1924 when he moved to Newport. He practiced in Newport until his retirement in 1945. Since 1958 he had resided in Salem and maintained a summer home on Devils Lake. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Newport Masonic Lodge, the Salem Elks Club and life member of the American Medical Association. Surviving are his wife, Martha Ellen; one step-daughter, Mrs. Irene Rairigh, Albany, Ore., two grand-daughters, Mrs. Janet Ashley and Miss Carol Stenzel, both of Greshan, Ore.; and one nephew, Stewart Thurtell, Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada."
