Notes for Robert BROWNE
Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 showed that Robert Browne, baptised at Lowestoft January 1, 1761, was married by licence at Hopton, Suffolk County, England, on September 25, 1787, to Sarah Thurtell, who was baptised at Norwich St. Julian November 4, 1759, daughter of James and Winifred Thurtell of Norwich, Norfolk County, and later of Flixton, Suffolk County. At the time of their marriage, he was a single man of Blundeston parish and she a single woman of Hopton parish, witnesses to the marriage being Elizabeth Calver and Elizabeth Thurtell. Family tradition relates that three Brownes "of Sparrow's Nest" married three Thurtells on the same day at the Church of St. Mary in Blundeston. The marriages of Robert's sisters Anne and Susannah are indeed recorded on the same day in Blundeston, but Robert's marriage is recorded only at Hopton. Perhaps the three couples had a common wedding celebration after the ceremony. Three children of Robert and Sarah (Thurtell) Browne appear in our sources, but no contemporary evidence of their birth has yet been found since we do not yet know the parish where they lived.
