Notes for William Ellis THURTELL

According to the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968 William [Ellis (?)] Thurtell was born about 1856 and died 1923 and married Augusta Sydney.

Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that William Ellis Thurtell, born in 1855, is described as having been a "bright and promising young man, but disappointing in later life. He studied medicine at the University of Cambridge but failed examinations, had an unhappy marriage, and saddened his father by becoming an atheist" according to information received from M. E. Shearing. When last heard from he was in South America (Mickle Collection document at the University of Guelph Library).

He married, Augusta Sydney but had no children. His Murray cousin and fellow student (Dr. A. E. Murray) seems to have inherited some of his silver tableware inscribed "WET."

The "Alumni Cantabrigienses," by J. A. Venn, published in 1921 in London by Cambridge University Press as a list of all known students, graduates, and officers at the University of Cambridge, 1261-1900, posted on the internet in November 1999 as part of the Ancestry.Com Library shows that William Ellis Thurtell was born June 12, 1855, at Oxburgh School, Clifton College, the only son of the Rev. Alexander Thurtell (born in 1825), Rector of Oxburgh, Norfolk. William Ellis Thurtell was admitted to Caius College, Cambridge University at age 18 on October 1, 1874. He matriculated Michs. 1874; B.A.. 1878; M.A. 1881. He was admitted on January 28, 1879, at Lincoln's Inn. He was a resident at Mayfield, Sussex, in 1895. At some time he was a bookseller and journalist at Chubut, Argentina. He died in 1923.
