Notes for Charles W. SNOW
The family Bible kept by Maria Morrison Snow beginning 1864 currently in the possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller shows Charles W. Snow was born October 31, 1864, in Dallas County, Iowa, and that he died on October 14, 1890, aged 25 years, 11 months, 14 days, in Reno, Nevada.
Charles W. Snow is shown as a white male age 5 born in Iowa in the 1870 U.S. Census on Pages 1and 2 (or Page 640 on the right side) living in Walnut Township, Dallas County, Iowa. The census was ennumerated August 2, 1870, and shows the Post Office as Dallas Center. This shows Charles B. Snow, age 37, a white male, born in Pennsylvania, whose occupation is shown as a farmer. The value of his real estate is shown as $13,375, and the value of his personal estate is shown as $1035. Living with them are Maria, age 28, a white female born in Vermont, whose occupation is shown as keeping house, and George M, a white male age 2 born in Iowa. Shown with an occupation of "lives in family" is Julia A. Snow, a white female age 49, who was born in Pennsylvania. This is undoubtedly Charles Blanchard Snow's sister. John Kelley, age 17, a white male born in New York, is listed with them with an occupation of farm laborer.
The U.S. Census for 1880 for Nevada (Nye County, Grantsville Precinct, NV 030, Page 17, Supervisor's District 81, E.D. 37) shows Charles B. Snow as a white male age 47, born in Pennsylvania, whose occupation was Justice of the Peace, with a health problem of asthma. It shows both his parents were born in Pennsylvania. He is living with his wife, Maria P, age 38, a dress maker, who was born in Vermont, as were both her parents. It shows their three children, all of whom were born in "Ioway," were living with them. Charles W., age 15, was a carpenter and had also attended school in the prior year. George F., age 12, and Mary J., age 9, were both in school. The census was ennumerated on the 21st and 22nd of June, 1880, with information as of June 1, 1880.
An index of the "Nevada State Journal" newspaper, 1870-1900, found in the Ancestry.com library on the internet in October 2000 shows that Charles W. Snow died October 14, 1890, in Reno and was a native of Iowa, aged 25.
The notice in the "Nevada State Journal" of October 15, 1890, on page 3, column 2, available in microfilm from the Nevada Historical Society, Reno, Nevada, shows "Death of Charley Snow - Yesterday morning at twenty minutes past eleven, Charley Snow, who had been ill for the week past of typhoid fever, breathed his last. He was a young man well known in Reno; sober, steady, capable and industrious. He had scores of friends and few or no enemies, and his untimely taking away just in the beginning of a useful career was a blow that caused a shadow of gloom to fall on all that new [stet] him. He was a young man whose life might serve as an example to all of the new generation. His was a character that was stainless and yet without cant or consciousness of superior worth.
"His labors supported an invalid father until his death but a few months ago, lightened the cares of a mother and educated a sister.
"He was a prominent Odd Fellow, and a member in high standing of the Good Templars of Reno. He was raised almost in Nevada, living almost all of his life in Hawthorne, from which place he removed to Reno a few years ago.
"He will not be buried here, but in Hawthorne, to which place his bereaved mother and sister will conduct the body to-day that it may rest beside those of his father and brother."
There is a second notice in the "Nevada State Journal" of October 15, 1890, on page 3, column 3, available in microfilm from the Nevada Historical Society, Reno, Nevada, which shows "Died - Snow - In Reno, Nevada, October 14, 1890, Chas. W. Snow, a native of Douglas county, Iowa, aged 25 years, 11 months and 14 days."
Another notice appeared in the "Nevada State Journal" of Saturday, October 18, 1890, on page 3, column 3, available in microfilm from the Nevada Historical Society, Reno, Nevada. This showed "In Memoriam - Resolutions of Condolence on the Death of Charles W. Snow - To the Officers and Members of Reno Lodge, No. 19, I. O. O. F. - Dear Sirs and Brothers: We, your committee appointed to draft resolutions of respect and esteem upon the death of our late brother, Chas. W. Snow, respectfully submit the following:
"Whereas, It has pleased Almighty God to take from us, by the hand of death, our beloved and esteemed brother Charles W. Snow, while yet in the prime of life; be it Resolved, That we bow in submission to the hand of fate; and to the loved one's [stet] who mourn a son's and brother's loss we extend the hand of friendship and sympathy in this their hour of sorrow; trusting that the Providence which has laid our late brother to rest may deal gently with those nearest and dearest to him, and assist in time to heal the wound which mortals of earth suffer when their love and hope has been rudely called away from them, help them to bear their burden, and finally, when they, too, pass to that great harbor beyond, may they meet their loved one in that 'home eternal beyond the skies.'
"We knew him in life as a noble-hearted, true and honest young man. We respected him for his moral worth and depth of character. We eulogize him and commend the example of his life, well lived, to all. His absence from our ranks will be marked, for he was a good citizen and a zealous and true Odd Fellow.
"Resolved, That in deference to his memory our Charter and Lodge be draped in mourning for the usual period; that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the relations of the deceased; that they be published in each of the daily papers of our city, and that they be spread in full upon the minutes of this Lodge. Yours, in F., L. and T, Henry B. Rulm (surname hard to read), G. O. McNees, W. D. Wade, Committee."
