Notes for Charles Blanchard SNOW
Much of the information about Charles Blanchard Snow is from the Family Bible kept by Maria Morrison Snow beginning 1864 and family master control sheet completed by Susan Persia Thurtell Miller January 24, 1977, plus information on the back of a picture of Charles Blanchard Snow. Both of these are in the possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller.
The Bible shows Charles Blanchard Snow was born in Pennsylvania, and the picture and control sheet show he was born in or near Palmyra, New York.
A telephone conversation with Mary Werch, Reference Librarian at the Roy E. Estle Memorial Library, Dallas Center, Iowa, phone 515-992-3185, on November 2, 2000, discussed a book at their library showing Dallas County marriages. This book showed that Charles B. Snow married Maria P. Morrison on January 2, 1862; A. J. Snow married Betsey Morrison on March 18, 1865; and Laura E. Snow married Edward Richmond on March 27, 1880.
A book at the Roy E. Estle Memorial Library, Dallas Center, Iowa, "Hastie's History of Dallas County, Iowa," by Eugene N. Hastie and published about 1937, on page 390 mentions that the "revised code of Iowa established a board of supervisors, with one from each civil township." The first meeting of this board was held on January 7, 1861, when there were ten organized divisons. One of the members of "the last large board, when there were 16 divisions, in 1869-1870," was "Chas. B. Snow."
Charles Blanchard Snow could not be found in the 1860 U.S. Census in Dallas County, Iowa. He and his family are in the 1870 U.S. Census on Pages 1and 2 (or Page 640 on the right side) as living in Walnut Township, Dallas County, Iowa. The census was ennumerated August 2, 1870, and shows the Post Office as Dallas Center. This shows Charles B. Snow, age 37, a white male, born in Pennsylvania, whose occupation is shown as a farmer. The value of his real estate is shown as $13,375, and the value of his personal estate is shown as $1035. Living with him is Maria, age 28, a white female born in Vermont, whose occupation is shown as keeping house. With them are Charles W. Snow, a white male age 5 born in Iowa, and George M, a white male age 2 born in Iowa. Shown with an occupation of "lives in family" is Julia A. Snow, a white female age 49, who was born in Pennsylvania. This is undoubtedly Charles Blanchard Snow's sister. John Kelley, age 17, a white male born in New York, is listed with them with an occupation of farm laborer.
Also on Page 1 of the 1870 U.S. Census in Walnut Township, Dallas County, Iowa, is Charles Blanchard Snow's brother, Samuel C. Snow, age 32, a farmer born in New York. Living with him, although relationships are not shown in the 1870 census, are Ellen Snow, age 36 and born in Ireland, whose parents were both of foreign birth, whose occupation is shown as keeping house. Also with them are Michael, age 17 born in Illinois, Alice, age 15 born in Illinois, Calhania, age 13 born in Illinois, Lauretta, age 7 born in Illinois, and Ellen, a baby born in Iowa.
Charles Blanchard Snow is shown as C. B. Snow in the 1875 State of Nevada Census for Nye County, Nevada, which was taken as of June 1, 1875. It shows him as the head of the household, born in Pennsylvania, age 42, and a carpenter. Living with him are his wife, Maria Snow, age 33, born in Vermont, his son C. W. Snow, age 10, his son G. F. Snow, age 7, his daughter Mary J. Snow, age 4, and L. E. Snow, age 39, who is obviously his sister, Lauraette. The children are all shown as born in Iowa, and L. E. Snow is shown as born in Pennsylvania. The children C. W. Snow and G. F. Snow are shown as being in school.
The U.S. Census for 1880 for Nevada (Nye County, Grantsville Precinct, NV 030, Page 17, Supervisor's District 81, E.D. 37) shows Charles B. Snow as a white male age 47, born in Pennsylvania, whose occupation was Justice of the Peace, with a health problem of asthma. It shows both his parents were born in Pennsylvania. He is living with his wife, Maria P, age 38, a dress maker, who was born in Vermont, as were both her parents. It shows their three children, all of whom were born in "Ioway," were living with them. Charles W., age 15, was a carpenter and had also attended school in the prior year. George F., age 12, and Mary J., age 9, were both in school. The census was ennumerated on the 21st and 22nd of June, 1880, with information as of June 1, 1880.
No death certificates for Inyo County, California, for 1890 exist as of 1999 and few cemetery records - most were destroyed by earthquakes and flash floods. There are microfilm records from the "Inyo Independent" newspaper of Independence, California, however, which are located at the Inyo County Free Library, Independence, California 93526. The Friday, March 14, 1890, issue had two notices of the death of Charles B. Snow. One showed "DIED - SNOW - At Keeler, March 9, 1890, Charles B. Snow, aged 57 years." The other notice in the "Inyo Independent" on March 14, 1890, showed "Charles B. Snow died at Keeler last Saturday. He had long been afflicted with asthma and found more relief at Keeler, where he has been for a month past, than at his home at Hawthorne."
The notice in the "Nevada State Journal" of October 15, 1890, on page 3, column 2, available in microfilm from the Nevada Historical Society, Reno, Nevada, regarding the death of Charles W. Snow, shows that Charles W. Snow was being buried in Hawthorne beside his father and brother. In 1890 Hawthorne, Nevada, was in Esmeralda County, although it became the county seat of Mineral County after 1911.
