Notes for Persia Bell Bishop THURTELL

The date and place of birth of Persia Belle Bishop Thurtell Burns are shown in the 1963 Thurtell Family History and the History of the Thurtell Family compiled by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, both in the possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller.

Her birth announcement appeared in the "Nevada State Journal" on July 28, 1894, as "Born - Thurtell - In Reno, July 27, 1894, to the wife of Prof. H. Thurtell of the State University, a daughter."

Baptismal records for the Trinity Episcopal Church of Reno, Nevada, for 1873 through 1899 are at the Nevada Historical Society, Reno, Nevada, as of November 2000. No record of the baptism of Persia Belle Bishop Thurtell was located in the Parish Register for 1894-1899.

She is listed as white, age 15, and single in the U.S. Census for Reno City, Washoe County, Nevada, for 1910 (Supervisor's District 171, Enumeration District 71, Sheet 7A). This shows she was living with her father, stepmother, half siblings, and her stepmother's mother, Maria Snow, at 761 North Centre Street, Reno, Nevada. The census was enumerated on April 10, 1910. It shows the children in the house were all born in Nevada, with their mother born in Iowa and their father born in Vermont.

Persia Thurtell Burns loved to write poetry and do oil painting, and she used to enjoy swimming every day even in her 70's. She lived for many years in California. At the time of her death she was living at the Crystal City Nursing Home, 1785 South Hayes Street, Arlington, Virginia 22202. Her Social Security Number was 579-66-7373, and Social Security Administration records confirm her date of birth was July 27, 1894. She filed for Social Security (Prouty) benefits and medicare in Washington, DC, in January 1966.
