A letter from her son, Dr. James Miller, dated July 7, 1998, recalled that their family was living in Berrien Springs, central Berrien County, Michigan, in 1920. His mother was born in Maple City (near Traverse City), the first daughter of Walter B. Thurtell and Agnes Hall. She graduated from the Traverse City school system and went to Ann Arbor in 1906, entering the University of Michigan Lit. School, where she met his father, who entered the University of Michigan Medical School of Homeopathic Medicine (or Homeopathy). His mother graduated from the Literary School in 1910, and his father graduated from the Medical School the same year. His mother then taught school in Hurley, Wisconsin, for one year. Hurley is close to the state line between Ironwood, Michigan, which was an iron and copper mining area. His father went to Suttons Bay and to the practice of medicine upon graduation. His parents were married in Traverse City in 1911. James and his twin brother, Francis George Miller, were born on October 14, 1913. Shortly after their birth, their mother had a ruptured appendix and was operated on by his uncle, Dr. Herbert Thurtell, on the kitchen table in Suttons Bay. She nearly died and drained for nine months. He and his brother were cared for during that period by their grandmother, (Agnes) Mrs. W. B. Thurtell.
