Notes for Mary Agnes HALL

Mary Agnes Hall is shown as the wife of Walter Thurtell in the family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900, in the 1963 Thurtell Family History, and in the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, all in the possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller.

Additional information was provided in a letter from Dr. James Walter Miller (born October 14, 1913, grandson of Mary Agnes Hall Thurtell and Walter Thurtell) to Susan Persia Thurtell Miller on April 10, 1977.

Mary Agnes Hall was often called Agnes. She was adopted from the New York City Children's Aid Society. Her adoptive family, the Halls, had a farm adjacent to the Thurtells' in Maple City, Michigan. This is where she met Walter Thurtell.

A July 1998 e-mail from Arnold Krause (krause@@makckenzie.usask.ca) showed that he found the record of the marriage of Walter Thurtell and Agnes Mary Hall on February 23, 1885, in Leelanau County, Michigan, at the Family History Center in Saskatchewan, Canada.

The 1870 U.S. Census for Leelanaw County, Kasson Township, Michigan lists Joshua Hall and his family on Page 8. The Post Office for their address was Traverse City, Michigan. The census was enumerated on August 2, 1870. It shows Joshua Hall, age 44, was a Clergyman, born in New York, owned real estate worth $3000 and a personal estate worth $2000. His wife, Eugenia, age 35, was shown as born in Vermont, with an occupation of keeping house. Their three children were all shown as born in New York. Agnes was shown as age 11. Winthrop was shown as age 7, and Howard was shown as age 1.

The 1880 U.S. Census for Leelanaw County, Kasson Township, Michigan (ED 159, Page 10, Supervisor's District 2), enumerated June 8 and 9, 1880, shows Joshua Hall as a preacher, age 53, who was born in New York. It shows his father was also born in New York, and his mother was born in New Hampshire. His wife, Eugenia, is shown as age 45, occupation keeping house, born in Vermont. It shows her father was born in New Hampshire, and her mother was born in Vermont. Their three children are all shown as born in New York. Agnes was 20, and her occupation is shown as teaching school. Winthrop was 17, and his occupation was farm laborer. Howard was 11. Both Winthrop and Howard are shown as attending school in the prior year. This family is on the same page as the family of Francis Thurtell in both the 1870 and 1880 census records. Agnes Hall later married Walter Thurtell.

The 1894 Leelanau County, Michigan, census showed no Thurtell or Hall families living in Kasson then. They probably had already moved but still owned the land, since the 1900 Leelanau County plat map shows the Thurtell and Hall lands in Kasson Township.

A May 1999 visit to the old Joshua B. Hall property showed the house appeared to have been built on a narrow steep rise above the surrounding land, although there was no longer anything there except trees and bushes.

She is shown as Agnes Thurtell, wife of Walter Thurtell, in the 1900 U.S. Census for Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, Michigan (Vol. 23, ED 42, Sheet 7, Line 41). This census shows she is a white female born in June 1859, age 40 as of June 1, 1900, married for 16 years, mother of three children, all of whom were living, and born in New York. It shows her father was born in Vermont and her mother in New York, and that she can read, write, and speak English. No occupation is listed for her.

The 1910 U.S. Census index for Washtenaw County, Michigan, (089 0120 0014) shows her as Agnes H., a white female age 29, born in New York, living with her husband, Walter, and her children, Eva and Helen.

In a letter dated July 7, 1998, her grandson, Dr. James Miller, recalled that Agnes Thurtell cared for him and his twin brother for about nine months when they were babies after his mother had suffered a ruptured appendix. He also showed that Agnes Hall Thurtell lived with their family from 1922 until her death in the 1940's.

She is buried at Oakwood Cemetery, 1225 East Eighth Street, Traverse City, Michigan 49686, telephone 616-922-4907, in Block 5, Lot 2, Second Edition. Oakwood Cemetery records confirm Agnes Mary Thurtell died February 4, 1944, at age 84 in Berrien Springs, Michigan.
