Notes for Earl Francis THURTELL
The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900, the 1963 Thurtell Family History, and the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, all in possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller show Earl Thurtell died at 21 and had married Gertrude and that they may have had a daughter.
The 1900 U.S. Census soundex for Illinois (Vol. 28, E.D. 280, Sheet 14, Line 49) shows Earl H. Thurtell, age 11, born in Michigan in December 1888, was living with his parents, Alfred and Olive H. Thurtell, at 918 South Spaulding Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
His marriage certificate number 536199 from the Cook County Clerk, Chicago, Illinois, shows that Earl F. Thurtell, age 21, was married to Gertrude Louise Danne, age 20, at Rogers Park, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on June 8, 1910, by George B. Pratt, Priest of the P. Episcopal Church. The birth certificate of his daughter, Lois Louise Thurtell, shows that his name was Earl Francis Thurtell, born in Marquette, Michigan, and deceased at the time the child was born in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on April 23, 1912. No announcement of their marriage was found in the "Chicago Daily Tribune" in 1910, but few marriage announcements appeared in this newspaper and virtually no birth announcements.
No death notice was found for Earl Thurtell in the microfilm records of the "Chicago Daily Tribune" of October 1-15, 1911. Chicago newspapers during the past century publish only a very few obituaries each day and paid death notices for some of the people who died in the area, but no mention of the deaths of many Chicago residents appears in the local newspapers.
There is an microfilmed index card on file at the National Archives, Chicago Region, in the General Pension Index microfilm series for Earl F. Thurtell. His particular card (unlike most of the others) is very dark and extremely hard to read. It shows that Earl F. Thurtell was a Seaman with the names Franklin and Mayflower the only legible items listed under his service. The pension index card shows he filed for an invalid pension on March 17, 1911, and the state from which he filed was Illinois. The application number appears to be 1395935, and the certificate number is illegible. The card shows he died in October 1911 and that his widow, Gertrude L. Thurtell, filed for a widow's pension on November 1, 1911, from the state of Illinois. The application number looks like 974295, and the certificate number is illegible. A claim for their minor child, Lois Louise Thurtell, was filed later - the filing date looks like November 27, 1918, and the application number could be 7131856 or possibly 9131856. The certificate number is illegible, but this claim was also filed from Illinois.
The Chicago Regional Office of the Department of Veterans Affairs, 536 South Clark, Chicago, Illinois 60680, in December 1999 confirmed that no record could be located for Earl Thurtell with the information that could be read from the index card record.
