Notes for Alfred THURTELL

The Thurtell Family History done about 1963 and the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968 show Alfred Thurtell was president of Chicago Copy Company, Wilmette, Illinois, and that he was born in 1859.

The 1900 U.S. Census soundex for Illinois (Vol. 28, E.D. 280, Sheet 14, Line 49) shows Alfred Thurtell was age 41, born in Canada in August 1858. His U.S. citizenship is shown as NA. He and his wife, Olive H., who was age 34, born in Michigan in January 1866, were living at 918 South Spaulding Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Their son, Earl H. Thurtell, age 11, born in Michigan in December 1888, was living with them. Mary Foley, relationship servant, age 24, born in March 1876 in Ireland, was also living with them. The census record shows that Alfred Thurtell immigrated to the United States in 1865 and that he was renting the home on Spaulding. It shows his occupation as a photographer. The census record shows that his father was born in England and his mother in Massachusetts.

A letter dated February 25, 1998, from Dr. James W. Miller, also confirmed that Edward B. Thurtell and Alfred Thurtell formed the Chicago Copy Company, which enlarged pictures and was quite successful.

The death certificate for Alfred Thurtell confirms his occupation was President of Chicago Copy Company. It shows he died at his home at 1215 Carmen Avenue, Ward 25, Chicago, Cook County, Illinos, on July 15, 1922, and that he was buried at Montrose Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois. It shows his date of birth as August 6, 1858, in Canada, and his parents as Francis Thurtell, born in England, and Amelia Higginson, born in Canada. His wife, Olive Thurtell, of the same address, was the informant on the death certificate.

The Chicago Tribune for July 16, 1922, describes him as "beloved husband of Olive, fond brother of Mrs. Louise Cook of Los Angeles, Edward of Chicago, Walter of Kalamazoo, Dr. Thurtell of Benton Harbor, and Henry of Washington, D. C." It also shows "Funeral service at chapel 2701 N. Clark st., Tuesday, July 18, 2 p.m.; interment Montrose. California papers please copy."

Records of Montrose Cemetery, 5400 North Pulaski, Chicago, Illinois 60630, 773-478-5400, show Alfred Thurtell was buried there on July 18, 1922, in Lot 201, Woodlawn Section. Buried in the same lot are Earl Francis Thurtell, who was buried October 12, 1911; Olive (Hall) Thurtell, buried October 1, 1931; Charles K. Daly, buried March 5, 1920; and Lydia Caroline Daly, buried May 8, 1914.
