Notes for Edward Benjamin THURTELL

The Thurtell Family History done about 1963 and the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968 show Edward Thurtell was secretary-treasurer of Chicago Copy Company, Austin, Illinois, and that Edward and Anna Thurtell had no children.

A notice in the January 1889 Grand Traverse Herald found on the internet in August 2000 at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jayhomer/heraldja1.htm showed in its Maple City section "As I chanced to be in Maple City a few days ago I was surprised to see the stir and enterprise manifested there. . . We then crossed the street [from the Post Office] and stepped into the store of Walter Thurtell. Walter has a nice stock of general goods, and is doing a good business, we should judge, from the number of customers being waited upon. Walter has a bland smile upon his face that betokens prosperity. He runs, beside the store, the Traverse City and Glen Haven mail route. His brother Ed. attends to the latter."

He is listed as Edward B. Thurtell, a single white male age 45 and born in Canada in March 1855 in the 1900 U.S. Census for Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, Michigan (Volume 23, SD 11, ED 41, Sheet 10, Line 26). His occupation is shown as picture (dealer) with no months unemployed. He is living with his parents, Francis and Amelia Thurtell, in the house owned by his father at 304 West Ninth Street, Traverse City, Michigan. The census shows he and his parents all immigrated to the United States in 1866, 34 years earlier, and that both he and his father were naturalized U.S. citizens.

The 1901 Traverse City, Michigan, directory list him as "Thurtell, Edward B, bds 304 W 9th." He is not listed in the 1905 Traverse City directory.

A letter dated February 25, 1998, from Dr. James W. Miller, also confirmed that Edward B. Thurtell and Alfred Thurtell formed the Chicago Copy Company, which enlarged pictures and was quite successful.

The death certificate of his mother from 1917 and his 1936 death certificate both show his address as 817 North Lorel Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. His death certificate shows he had been a bookkeeper and that he had worked until 1935. The Illinois death index 6000016 shows Edward B. Thurtell died January 2, 1936, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His death certificate shows he was 79 at the time he died.

The death notice in the January 3, 1936, Chicago Tribune shows he was "husband of the late Anna B. Thurtell, brother of Mrs. Louisa Cook and Henry Thurtell."

He was buried January 4, 1936, at Elmwood Cemetery, 2905 North Thatcher Road, River Grove, Illinois 60171, 708-478-5400, in lot 5, section 3.
