Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows Mercedes Espinosa was of Spanish descent and that she had married Walter Murray before 1856. She had come from Spain to Peru and then to California, and had been married to a Spanish man who died at sea, and met Walter Murray soon after landing in Monterey.
