Harriet Ellen Thurtell was born on December 20, 1856, in Grant County, Wisconsin, a daughter of Edward Brookes Thurtell and Amy Burns. She married Hugh Cattnach in on July 24, 1882, in LeMars, Plymouth County, Iowa.

Her sister, Mary Catherine Thurtell, was born September 1, 1849, in Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin. She married George Withrow on February 20, 1870, in Grant County, Wisconsin.
