Edward Goddard Thurtell
Edward Goddard Thurtell was the eldest son of Captain John Brookes Thurtell and Ellen Aldred. He was born September 19, 1840, in Norfolk County, England. He emigrated to South Africa sometime prior to 1878 and founded a large family in South Africa and Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.
He was married to Sophie Dewing in Adelaide, Cape Province, South Africa; and they had four children, Edward John Godfrey Thurtell, Walter Henry Thurtell, Richard Ernest Thurtell, and Charles Thurtell. Sophie died September 9, 1914, at Port Elizabeth, Cape Province, South Africa. Edward died May 25, 1888, at Cheviot Fells, West Bedford, Cape Colony, South Africa, and is buried on his farm there.
