John Thurtell

The Black Sheep of the Thurtell Family

John Thurtell, born December 21, 1794, in England, and hanged January 9, 1824, at Hertford, England, is the "black sheep" of the Thurtell family. He was the son of Thomas Thurtell, the Mayor of Norwich, Norfolk, England, and Susanna Browne Thurtell. The extensive publicity regarding his crime, trial, and hanging is undoubtedly why many Thurtells moved to America, South Africa, Australia, and some even used the last name Turner for a while, while others changed the family name to Murray.

This picture of John Thurtell was taken by Joel Thurtell in about February 1967 at Madame Tussaud’s Waxworks in London, England.
